We are very excited about our new reading series called Treasures. You can find a link below in Resources with games and activities that will help your child with each week's skills and strategies.
As you read each night with your child, please use these prompts that are used in the classroom:
-
Predictions- throughout the story stop and ask your child what will happen next.
-
Mental Images- as you read with your child have them close their eyes and "picture" what is happening in the story.
-
Questions- remember to always ask your child literal questions such as who, what, where and when. Additionally ask them inferential questions such as how and why, which challenge your child to think about the story in more depth.
-
Clarify- when your child is stuck on a "tricky" word prompt them with phrases like, "look at the picture", "find smaller words/chunks" and "re-read the sentence and think about what work makes sense".
-
Summarize- after reading, always have your child tell you what the story was about in their own words. Encourage them to use as many details as possible and re-tell in proper sequence.
Math
Math skills and concepts are taught using hands-on activities as well as workbook pages from our Harcourt Math series. Skills from each chapter are introduced and practiced for 1 - 2 weeks prior to assessment. Chapter packets are sent home before the test to be used as a review of the concepts taught. Please refer to the Unit Newsletter for updates on the math skills and concepts we are currently working on.
